چکیده
Abstract We present an analysis of the 20 year snowfall dataset in Taylor Valley and results a new snow cover monitoring study. Snowfall has been measured at four sites from 1995 to 2017. focus on valley-floor when wind does not exceed 5 m s -1 , we exclude winter our due poor data quality. averaged 11 mm water equivalent (w.e.) 2017 across all stations ranged 1 58 w.e. Standard deviations 3 17 w.e., highlighting strong interannual variability Valley. During spring autumn there is spatial gradient such that coast received twice as much more central inland stations. identified changepoint 2007 increasing (3 yr ) decreasing (1 ), which coincides with shift temperature no detectable trend. Daily camera imagery augments measurements. The revealed near tripling average number days 37 between 2006 2012 106

Distribution of Siliceous-Walled Algae in Taylor Valley, Antarctica Lakes
The McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica are a unique environment characterized by extreme lows in temperature and precipitation, which supports a low diversity microbial and multicellular fauna and flora. Terrestrial biomass is largely limited to soil microbes and mosses, while perennially ice-covered lakes host aerobic and anaerobic microbial communities, algae, and a low diversity eukaryotic fa...
متن کاملThe geochemistry of upland ponds, Taylor Valley, Antarctica
The McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica are the largest ice-free region on the continent. These valleys contain numerous water bodies that receive seasonal melt from glaciers. For forty years, research emphasis has been placed on the larger water bodies, the permanent ice-covered lakes. We present results from the first study describing the geochemistry of ponds in the higher elevations of Taylor...
متن کاملMetabolic activity and diversity of cryoconites in the Taylor Valley, Antarctica
[1] Metabolic activity and biogeochemical diversity within cryoconites from the Canada, Commonwealth, Howard, and Hughes glaciers in the McMurdo Dry Valleys revealed the presence of a productive microbial refuge in this polar desert ecosystem. Fluorescent in situ hybridization showed a high percentage of Cytophaga-Flavobacteria cells in cryoconite sediments (87.2%), while b-Proteobacterial cell...
متن کاملMicro-Eukaryotic Diversity in Hypolithons from Miers Valley, Antarctica
The discovery of extensive and complex hypolithic communities in both cold and hot deserts has raised many questions regarding their ecology, biodiversity and relevance in terms of regional productivity. However, most hypolithic research has focused on the bacterial elements of the community. This study represents the first investigation of micro-eukaryotic communities in all three hypolith typ...
متن کاملCyanobacterial diversity across landscape units in a polar desert: Taylor Valley, Antarctica.
Life in the Taylor Valley, Antarctica, is dominated by microorganisms, with cyanobacteria being key primary producers in the region. Despite their abundance and ecological importance, the factors controlling biogeography, diversity, dispersal of cyanobacteria in Taylor Valley and other polar environments are poorly understood. Owing to persistent high winds, we hypothesize that the cyanobacteri...
